Alkalinity is determined by adding an indictator, methyl purple, to the sample, then adding 0.02 N H2S04 until the solution turns from green to purple. The amount of 0.02 N H2S04 deterimines the alkalinity. A volume less than 2.5 ml of 0.02 N H2S04 does not meet Canadian Guide line standards and the water is less able to resist changes in pH.
